Year 9 Creative Media Animation – Term 4

Task 4: iBook, commentary and self-reflection and evaluation:

Part One: Discuss your feelings about the iBook animation story task:

1. Are you satisfied with the final result?

Yes, I am very satisfied with my iBook. It has turned out very well.

1. Did the iBook require more/less time than you originally thought?

The iBook took way less time than I thought it would, I did not realise how smple and easy it was to make.

1. Would like to change any aspects of your final project (layout, links, images, video and audio content, colour scheme etc)?

No, I don’t think there is anything specific that I would want to change. Of course I could do lots of things differently, but I think that the way it is pretty good.  

1. If you could start the project again what would you do differently?

If I were to do the project again I would maybe make the story longer, and more in depth. 

Part Two: Respond to each of the following dot points (using complete sentences or paragraphs). You should include as much detail as possible in your responses.

1. Discuss whether your iBook has turned out the way you pictured.

Yes, it has turned out how I wanted it to, and maybe even even better, as I thought it would have been much harder, but it was actually really easy.

1. Explain whether your iBook clearly depicts the style of your animation and describe some specific design principles that you have used to achieve this.

I think my iBook has clearly depicted the style of my animation- simple. I chose to keep it simple and light as it is aimed at young kids. I did this by using light colours, and keeping everything looking happy. 

1. Describe any problems or technical difficulties you encountered while creating your spoken words in GarageBand. These may include; sound or video issues, corrupt or missing files, difficulty using the iBooks Author or GarageBand software, problems importing/exporting files, etc;

When I first began the iBook, I had been putting in the videos without sound, but I realised this so I just replaced them with the right ones. Also the sound in parts of my iBook sound really weird, I’m not sure how to explain it, you can still her everything properly though so it isn’t too much of a problem. 

1. Did you have all of the necessary resources to complete your iBook or did you have to create new materials? 

No, I had everything thst I needed for my iBook, and I didn’t need to create anything else for it which is a good thing. 

1. List the steps you used to plan and develop your project.

I just kept it in the order of the original animation I created. 

- I figured out how many chapters I would need, and wether i was going to have lots of little ones of a few large ones

- I then cut my video into the chapters I wanted

- I put them into iBook author

- Lastly I put in the written part of the book. 

1. Talk about any time-management issues you encountered during the project and describe the steps you took to improve in this area;

I worked really slowly through this project as it was pretty simple, but I still had it done in time, so I don’t really think I had any time management problems. 

1. Discuss whether you undertook adequate and detailed reflection throughout your project. i.e. Have you provided enough evidence to support your work? (Look back at your blogs and think about whether it looks like a whole terms worth of work)

No, I don’t think I have undertaken adequate and detailed reflections, as I did not make a very thorough blog, that was very in depth.

iBook

I did not keep a very good blog during this project, so I thought I would put everything into this one post, and delete the rest. 

In the beginning I played around on iBook author, so I knew how everything worked. After a couple of lessons of making little mini books I had figured everything out, and realised that it was actually very simple and easy to use. I then began to plan out my story. I figured out what my chapters were going to be, how many, and how long would each be. I really just made it that every big thing that happened would be a chapter and whatever other little bits were needed in that chapter. After this I cut the movie into the specific chapters and put them into the iBook. After this I began to write the story. I put much more dialog and information into this than what is in the videos. This is because it is easier to put across a story through words than it is in the animation. So I did this for each. Afterwards I put in a glossary. This was pretty straightforward as the book didn’t really have hard word, because it is aimed at such a young age group, so I just did the words that I thought the little kids might not know, plus some other simple words. Then it was time to hand it in, but when I put it on the iPad I realised that I hadn’t put in any titles for the chapters, so I had to do that that, and redo putting it onto the iPad. After this everything was done and I am pleased with what I did.

Discuss your feelings about the production task:

• Are you satisfied with the final result?

Yes, I am happy with my final result, yes I did encounter a few problems but I was able to overcome them and stay on track and have my animation ready and done in the time frame we were given. 

• Did the animation process require more or less time than you originally thought?

My animation actually took less time then I thought. I thought that I would be really pushing it, but I quite easily finished it in time. 

• Would like to change any aspects of your final project (style of animation, the concept etc.)?

No, I am happy with what I have done.  think it is entertaining and has a good story line so I am satisfied. 

• If you could start the project again what would you do differently?

If I were to start the project again I would probably would have put more detail into my back grounds, I didn’t as I thought I wouldn’t have enough time but now I know that I finished it easily then yes I would have done more in my background.

• Discuss whether your final animation has turned out the way you imagined?

Yes, my final animation did turn out the way I planned. There are some little modifications that I made compared to my drawing board to improve it, but other than that it is just the way I planned. 

• Discuss whether you had to modify any elements of your original concept and planning to create your project;

I had to change somethings, as I did not know how to do what I was trying to do so by changing it a little bit it allowed me to create what I was aiming for. 

• Explain how your animation skills developed during the project (i.e. did you become more efficient?; did the quality of your animation improve?; did you have to use a variety of animation techniques? etc);

Throughout the making of my animation I think my skills did improve quite greatly. Each time I would have a problem I would try my best to figure it out myself, and by doing this I was improving and expanding my knowledge in animation. 

• Describe any problems or difficulties you encountered during the animation process. (These may include; technical difficulties, corrupt or missing files, difficulty using the editing software, problems exporting etc.)

A couple of times I thought I had saved it properly, but when I would get there the next lesson I would find out that I hadn’t, so that was annoying, but after those couple of times I was very strict on my self on saving them properly and in multiple places. 

• Explain if you made effective use of storyboards and scene planning/breakdown?

I did make an effective storyboard, and I was able to go off of it quite easily.

• Describe whether your planning assisted or helped you to focus during the animation process;

I think by having my planning and storyboard, it didn’t matter wether I forgot what I was meant to do next as I would just do what I had on the storyboard. I also saved a lot of time by not having to think of what to do next, and getting stuck and what not. 

• Describe any time-management issues you or your group came across during the project and describe the steps you took to improve in this area;

I didn’t really encounter any time management problems. I completed my work in time, and I didn’t have to rush to get it finished or anything. 

• Discuss whether you undertook adequate and detailed reflection throughout your project. Have you provided enough evidence to support your work? (Look back at your blogs/journals and think about whether it looks like a whole term worth of work);

No, I don’t think that I did the best I could have done in my reflections and blog. I do have reflections, but just not as detailed as it probably should be. 

• List any other software skills, animation techniques, tricks or shortcuts you have learned during the project.

I haven’t really learnt any new skills or tricks, but I have improved my knowledge on how to do the things that I already knew.

This scene was simple enough because I had already encountered quite a few problems throughout the animation, so I knew what to do. Although it was easy it did take a while to do though because i had to remove the right colour at the right time, and the right colour, all while the rainbow fish was moving through all the fish.

In this scene i made it three times, because the first time i forgot to add the fish in, and then when i did it wouldn't work how i needed it too, then the second time i put it in the fish would flash on and off and I couldn't figure out why, then finally I got it to work by having the octopus in the back ground and the fish in the fore ground, then i could move them both at the same time and without the fish flashing on and off.

I attempted to make this scene multiple times, but couldn't quite get it to work properly, so I made quite a few copies in order to get it all right. I also had to make 2 parts, as i wasn't able to zoom in and move my fish at the same time, the right way.

In this scene, like the previous one I had to make it in different sections. I also had to have moving parts in both the from and back as there is a lot of movement in this scene. It took me while to think of how i was going to move the ball, but then i figured it out and it was ok.

This scene has three parts, because in order for me to be able to do what I wanted with the rainbow fish- have it move in different directions, and not all at once, i couldn't make it all in one file. It took me a few attempts to figure this out but once I did it was easy.

This is the first scene of my animation and I have just used the simple techniques of the 'truck' to make the fish move up and down, and let the rainbowfish travel across the screen.

This is where i drew my rainbow fish, so i could just copy and paste it in the other scene. This means that they would all look the same. I got an image off the internet and traced so that it would look relatively like the real rainbow fish. 

Term 2!!!!!!!!!!!

Ok, so I haven't been very good with my blog lately so I'm going to start NOW!!!!

So far I haven't done very much because I spent quite a few of the early lessons researching different ideas, and experimenting with different things on Animation-ish and iStopmotion. I decided to go with the theme of around the world. In my story it starts off in Australia with an australian bow who says G'day, as this is a common term, and then moves onto most of the main countries, each with either a young boy or girl saying hi in their language.

Evaluation

During the making of my Avatar I encountered numerous problems, these were:

1.    Not being able to do my first idea, as it was too hard. I tried doing it in different ways but they all became too hard to do. So I decided to change my idea, witch turned out to be better anyway.

2.    I lost my USB, so I had to start over. This was a bit challenging trying to get it done in time but turned out well.

3.    A few times when I was working on my photoshop I did not know how to do something, or forgot it, I just asked a friend or Mr. Powel. If this was not possible, I would either watch one of the videos on black board or try doing different things.

 My planning and organization skills aren’t very good, so they let me down a few times. I often half way through something, think of a different way to do it, so I would get rid of what I had been working on start fresh. This was good in some ways as I was thinking of new better ways of doing certain things, but then it was bad because I would have spent quite a bit of time on the first one but then not use it at all. A couple of times I forgot to bring my USB to class so I would have to borrow someone else’s then transfer it to mine the following lesson. This wasn’t very good as I had files on all these different USB’s.

I made sure that I had all of my layers appropriately named and in the right order so that everything that need to be seen could be seen, and in the right way. 

I 

I had some issues with keeping on track whilst creating my avatar, and wouldn’t work the best I could in class. But I did borrow out a laptop most weekends and continue with my avatar. I also would work on it in prep after school. By doing this it helped me keep up with getting certain stages done in a good time, so I wouldn’t have to rush.

No, I don’t think that I did the best I could with keeping up with my blog. I often would think about it, but then not end up doing it. I don’t think that my reflections support my as well they should.

·      Are you satisfied with the final result?

I am satisfied with what I have created, but I do feel that I could have done better.

·      Would like to change any aspects of your avatar?

I would have liked to use a different back ground and make it look more like a jungle

·      If you could start the project again what would you do differently?

If I were to do this project again I would have planned it out better, and not make it up as I went on.

·      Are you pleased with the progress you have made in using Photoshop?

I am pleased with what I have done with photoshop, I have learnt a lot both from Mr Powell and from playing around with the program.

THE IDEA

I have decided to change what I am doing for my Photoshop, as I lost my flash drive and rather than doing what i was originally doing I had a better idea. My new Photoshop holds the idea that we are all 'Animals in a Concrete Jungle'. I will have Portia and Olivia as animals than have them in a big city with vines growing off them. So the faces of the girls will make them look like the animals, and the vines on the buildings will represent the idea of the concrete jungle.

Assignment idea!!!!!!!

My idea is to show how what people look like on the outside doesn't necessarily show who they are on the inside. Im probably going to have an old looking lady who people would normally think is nice or cute etc. and a younger punk rocker looking girl that you would be scared of, and then in the back ground their true selves. So the old lady will be like a devil and the punk girl will be nice.

Sad

  This boy is showing the emotion of sadness because he has tears running down his face, but also because his mouth is slightly open and his eyes are just staring ahead. This makes the boy look vulnerable, which helps show his sadness.

 The emotion of sadness is shown in this photo by the girls bottom lip cured under her top, and her eyebrows are slightly crumpled. This doesn't make her look hysterical, but shows that she has a sadness within. 

Although you can not see this mans face, you can tell he is sad as his head is facing down and he is blocking his face with his hand. This shows disclosure and he doesn't want anyone around him, or to see him.

The Treemu

The Treemu
The Treemu was made using a picture of an Emu, and a Tree Frog. I first removed the Emu's head from its body and dragged it onto the tree frog. I made sure the eyes were matched up, i turned the opacity down making it easy to see both images, as this gives it good alining. Once i had the emu's head at a good size I created a mask and removed the background from it. I then duplicated the layer with the full treemu and named it beak, in this layer I only left the beak of the emu showing. This made it easy for me to colour only the beak and nothing else. I repeated what I did for the beak for the head.
